One other interesting difference: the yelman seems to be quite pronounced on my sword versus Herr Meihs' illustration in the post from 15/07/08.

The breadth of the yelman was actually what attracted me to this sword in the first place -- it is much more broad than others I have seen. The blade measures 3.04cm wide at the beginning of the yelman, the same dimension as the blade at the forte.

All that said, it's really a beautiful sword. I can easily understand why one would have five of them. :)

First results and anecdotes:

This is a very fine exemplar of the "schleswig-holsteinisch" infantry-officer's saber (personal item).

If you're looking for further exemplars, you'll maybe find them in brazil too. 1850/51 the brazilian army recruited soldiers in germany for the battle against the argentinian dictator Rosas. Some soldiers of the former S-H-army served as volunteers in this "Brummer" [pronounced: "broommer" with short "oo" :) ] -legion.

(The origin of the name "Brummer" might be: The soldiers were paid with the big 40-Reis-copper-coins and called them: "Brummer" [plump things - "bluebottles"].)

S-H-officers, because of the officer's code of honor, were allowed to keep their swords after the S-H-danish war. Many of the "Brummer"-volunteers stayed in brazil, and so there is a good chance, to find S-H-officer-swords there! ;)

Dies ist ein sehr schönes Eigentums-Exemplar des schleswig-holsteinischen Infanterie-Offiziersäbels.

Wenn man weitere Stücke sucht, könnte man auch in Brasilien fündig werden. 1850/51 wurden in Deutschland von Brasilien Truppen für den Kampf gegen den argentinischen Diktator Rosas angeworben. Die so entstandene "Brummer"-Legion rekrutierte sich auch aus der aufgelösten Schleswig-Holsteinschen Armee.

(Ein Erklärungsansatz für den Namen "Brummer" ist, dass die norddeutschen Söldner, als sie in Brasilien mit den großen 40-Reis-Kupfermünzen entlohnt wurden, gesagt haben sollen: "Man, wat för Brummer".)

Da den schleswig-holsteinischen Offizieren auf Grund des Ehrenkodex ihre Waffe nach Kriegsende belassen wurde und viele der Söldner in Brasilien heimisch wurden, stehen die Chancen nicht schlecht, in Brasilien schleswig-holsteinische Offizierwaffen zu finden! ;)
