Hello, gentlemen.

I believe this is the Danish M1869 artisan's sword, although swords with a very similar hilt are pictured in the book by K.B.Petersen as being carried by the Danish navy .

I am having a tough time with the markings. What do they mean?

Obverse is marked F or P[?].DORANDT
Reverse is marked LN COEN
Any help would be appreciated!

This is the danish Handvaerkersabel Model 1869.
Möller gives the following description:

............The sabre was originally used bei the Slesvig-Holstein army
as a bayonet on Danish rifles captured and adapted at Rendsburg
in 1848. Once the bayonet device had been removed, the weapon became
regulation issue in 1869. 816 items were in stock in 1854.

Sorry, but there is no trace of a maker F. or P. DORANDT.
The regular maker in 1848 was P.D. Lüneschloss at Solingen.

One of the marks was actually deciphered by a keen friend as IN COLN .
So we have F.DORANDT IN COLN .

Does anyone know of a manufacturer or dealer by that name who was located in Cologne?

Perhaps the sword is not Danish after all..?

Let's see if now I understand it correctly -
-this was originally a Prussian M1810 bayonet
-in 1848 they were given or sold by Prussia to S-H and mounted with the Danish M1803 and M1807 buchse
-after they were captured by Denmark, the bayonet mounts were ground off, and later issued as M1869 handwerkersabel.

a prussian model, yes.

S-H army bought same model (known: Solingen, P.D. Luneschloss), not given from prussia.

afterwards, Denmark used this model as bayonet (e.g. H.I.B. = "Holsteinisches Jäger-Bataillon"), and later modified as M1869 Handwerkersabel.
