Hallo Thomas,

ich habe es mal mit Öl probiert (Ballistol hatte ich da); im Abstand von ein paar Stunden, immer wenn es eingezogen war, wieder satt aufgetragen. Der Erfolg war nicht überwältigend, hat das Leder aber so elastisch gemacht, dass ich es ein wenig bewegen konnte, ohne dass es bricht. Wasser wollte ich nicht nehmen, da das Leder dann nach dem Trocknen noch härter wird und "Lederweich" hatte ich nicht im Hause.

Doc habe ich angemailt (Danke für den Hinweis).

Hallo Carsten,

deshalb habe ich nachgefragt. Ausserdem müßte man das Wasser so schnell wie möglich wieder aus dem Leder entfernen, da es sonst die unmittelbare Umgebung zur Oxydation anregt. Hier hätte ich dann Pressluft empfohlen.

Ich muß mich mal mehr mit der Thematik Lederpflege beschäftigen, vor allem um die Mittel, die bei der Verarbeitung Verwendung finden.

Stimmt,

ich erinnere mich, der sogenannte "Handgelenksbrecher", so auch beschrieben im deutschsprachigen Buch "Blankwaffen - Ein internationales Brevier", von Gerald Weland (Motorbuch Verlag Stuttgart 1994).
Mich wunderte, warum die Amerikaner mit dieser Waffe nicht klargekommen sind. Aus dem Ursprungsland (Frankreich) kamen anscheinend keine Klagen.

Das Buch hatte ich aber wieder weggegeben, da es für mich keinen Nährwert besaß.

Sorry it took so long to respond but I have been very busy and it is difficult for me to read German. I learned German in high school about 40 years ago and have never been to Germany, Austria or any German speaking country. I do hope to visit one day.

There was a very good web page with the history of the M1840 sword but the web page is no longer there. A friend of mine translated it into German. I posted it here.

thank you for your answer and the interesting Burgundian Howitzer shooting etc. film-links. Sorry it took much longer to respond, but foreign languages never have been my favorites too mit Augen rollen .

A short summary of the things discussed above:

There are no no markings on the ricasso or any other stamps but downside the grip under the leather "47" and "73" on the throat piece (foto). We think, these are manufacturing-marks. May be there had been some markings on the ricasso, but now the blade is "perfectly" cleaned.

You wrote: "Your sword looks like what we call the M1840 import. A lot of them were not marked and for some reason most were not stamped with US inspector's marks."

Is there any typical sign or design-detail that helps to identify this saber as US-M1840 or did other countries use this saber too?

For our german-speaking collector-friends:

Ich habe copdoc kurz das Wesentliche des oben Gesagten geschildert.
Er hatte geschrieben: "Dein Säbel sieht aus wie ein Stück, dass wir M1840 Import nennen. Viele von Ihnen waren nicht gestempelt und hatten aus irgendwelchen Gründen auch keine US-Abnahmestempel."
Meine Frage geht nun dahin, ob es bei diesem Stück Merkmale gibt, die es erlauben, es zweifelsfrei als US-Säbel zu identifizieren, oder war dieser Säbel auch in anderen Ländern in Gebrauch?

Sorry again it took so long again. My father was killed in a car accident a couple of weeks ago and Mom is in the hospital after having a stroke.

If I spoke German was better it would be easier to answer you. I wish I could live in Germany or Austria for a year or two to learn the language. I also wish I knew more about these sabres. One of the web pages that had a lot of information is no longer on line.

The Model 1840 is identified by the length, style of handle and the flat back on the blade. The US import ones were not marked by the US which is unusual. The blade is very similar (maybe the same) as the French M1822. I am not sure if any other countries used this or a similar pattern. As you know the Europeans have made many models of swords over the years. Far more than in the US.

I would like to see a site on these also. A lot of American Civil War swords have been replicated and faked so collecting them would be both expensive and risky. The M1840 imports are still affordable in the US now. This might be because some collectors do not realize that they are real US military swords since some are unmarked and none of them have US proof marks.
